A downloadable game for Windows

Text-based systemic escape room with focus on soft sci-fi, psychology, and romance.

Whereas the previous version, Anima X, relied only on the Windows Console, Anima's Wake features an improved UI made with PyGame, a dynamic soundtrack, and several new quests (e.g., white_wedding) as well as features (e.g., the toilet and what the player can use it for).

Setup

Anima's Wake does not need to be installed. Simply run Anima's_Wake.exe from the game folder (Windows only).

Unfortunately, as of August 17th, 2026, 5/71 security vendors on VirusTotal still flag the file as malicious. This is due to false positives caused by PyInstaller, which built the game so you don't have to install Python. Anima's Wake contains no malware, transmits zero data, and only changes files within the game's folder. Like any downloaded software, general platform risks apply.

How to Play

To make decisions in Anima's Wake, you can click the buttons displayed below the text space or simply press the corresponding (number) keys on the keyboard. Some recurring menus, such as the [REDACTED] menu or the [REDACTED] talk menu, require you to click [ ] Return or press [Enter] to exit them and return to room level.

Some options marked with the letter [x] are meta-hacks with unknown outcomes, but if you are determined enough you may decipher the mystery font before meta-hacking [https://antonhoyer.com/caidoz/].

To access the main menu, choose [x] MAIN MENU while in the Atrium Ω. This menu lets you quit the game properly, look up in-game statistics, and change settings such as text speed or window mode.

Saving & Loading

Your progress is saved automatically under userdata/savegame.bin whenever you enter a room or conclude a dialog. Additional savepoints are created after each new build of the [REDACTED]. To load a specific savegame, simply replace userdata/savegame.bin with the savegame you want to play. (Make a backup first.)

However, the save feature is mostly there so that the game can be enjoyed over multiple sessions. For maximum immersion, you are discouraged from excessive reloading (save scamming). Almost no decision is so poor that it will prevent you from getting one of the happy endings.

Bugs & Feedback

Due to the highly systemic nature of Anima's Wake, bugs are inevitable. I fixed several thousand already and used a random selection bot to identify especially game-breaking bugs, but you never know until players have their way with your game. In case you encounter bugs/glitches/typos, I would be honored if you reported them. For complex bugs, please attach the files userdata/savegame.bin and userdata/buglogs/exceptions.log so I can comprehend them.

I'm also looking forward to receiving feedback and, if possible, providing assistance to those who believe they are stuck. Anima's Wake contains a secret cheat engine that should help fix most problems.

Meters

Be mindful of your sanity meter [ξ]. It is easy to keep around 100% but harder to recover from full insanity. Once you start seeing insanity glyphs [♂♠☼♫♯✶₪∞⌂№†Ω₰...] or behaving irrationally, you should increase your sanity by meditating, playing chess, showering, watching sunsets, or being selfish.

The affection meter [♥] is different in that it always resets to 50% with each build of the [REDACTED]. Increase it by being polite, honest, empathetic, or altruistic -- it may go a long way.

Also regularly check your supply of nutritious goo because you need it for food, building the [REDACTED], and other experiments. Running out of goo usually means game over.

Encouragement

Most importantly, do not be afraid to try things out. The most secure way to progress the main quest is exploring the apartment with the [REDACTED] following you. It is crucial for the [REDACTED] to be liquidated again and again to improve, by whatever means necessary.

So far, only a handful of people managed to beat Anima's Wake. But if a random selection bot can beat the game blindly in less than 3 seconds (console disabled for higher performance), I believe you can do it in a few hours or days. Even those who haven't finished the game yet keep telling me they remember it fondly.

Discouragement

This text adventure game features content that could trigger unwanted emotions or reactions in some players. In particular, it concerns themes of suicide, depression, murder, violence, abuse, incest, necrophilia, cannibalism, drug use, insanity, expletives, sexuality (and mathematics). If you are easily upset by any of these, you should not play this game alone or altogether.

If you are overly intrigued by any of these themes, you probably should not either; they are presented in a narrative, technological, and psychological context, not intended for perverse titillation.

AI Disclaimer

Artificial Intelligence, particularly LLM (ChatGPT), was used to create PyGame code as a wrapper around the existing human-made Python codebase of Anima X (speaking as a dev, it was a mess, but I am content now). No AI was used for the actual writing of the quests -- except to add a few more wedding vows, which merely adds more variety to a decision the average player makes once/never, thus being negligible. Besides, ChatGPT doesn't like this game due to the trigger themes listed above, so it didn't even get to see the majority of quests/script files.

As of this version, AI-generated images are used as placeholder backgrounds until the actual artwork is finished. (It will be based on a 3D-render of the apartment; however, the [REDACTED] requires further effort until the Blender renders can be released.)
